The Minnesota Wild have named Dean Evason as the new full time head coach. Evason was previously the interim coach for the Wild, and has been a long time coaching assistant. He began as the interim head coach in February of 2020, and had an 8-4-0 record for the short time at the helm.

The Minnesota Wild have signed him to a two year extension that will keep him as coach through the 2021-2022 season.  Wild GM Bill Guerin applauded Evason's work in Minnesota in the announcement today.

"I am very excited to announce that Dean Evason is our full-time head coach," said Guerin. "Dean has done a fantastic job as our interim head coach and deserves this opportunity. I look forward to watching our team under his leadership going forward."

Dean Evason was hired in June of 2018 as an assistant coach in Minnesota. He previously was the head coach for the AHL league Milwakee Admirals from 2012-2018. Before that, Evason was an assistant coach for the Washington Capitals where the team advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the last 5 years of his tenure.

The Minnesota Wild fired former coach Bruce Boudreau back on February 14th, 2020 after dismal season. At that time, they handed the reigns over to Dean Evason, and now make the move to fully promote him to head coach.

The NHL, like other sports, has been put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. However the league and players union are hoping for a return to hockey in August.
