Can You Pass A Snowplow On A Minnesota Road?
We saw some nasty weather in early January and if this winter is anything like ones of the past, we can expect a lot more where that came from.
We still have to go to work and live our lives, even in a major winter storm. Usually, we see a ton of plows out clearing the roads but what happens if you are behind one? Are you allowed to pass it or should you wait it out?
Here's the answer: legally, you are allowed to pass it but keep in mind, this is usually a dangerous option.
According to MnDOT, "there are no state laws that prohibit you from passing a snowplow."
With that said, it is important to keep in mind that plows have "wing plows" on one side of the truck. These "wings" can extend anywhere from 2 to 10 feet beyond the width of the snow plow and they can be difficult to see, especially during a storm.
So while it may be legal to pass a snow plow, do you really want to? By the way, MnDOT also reports that most accidents involving plows occur when someone tries to pass one.
Yikes.
Now that you know this important information, it's probably a good idea to brush up on these rules about shoveling snow. The more you know.
