Did You Know These Rules About Shoveling Snow After A Storm?
The winter storm we saw across the Northland Sunday night into Monday left very dangerous road conditions with ice, snow, and a reminder that there are rules to shoveling you need to be aware of.
Despite the snow we've seen in recent weeks, you may want to pump the brakes on shoveling snow for a second. Why? Because there are actually city rules about where you can and can not push snow AND when you do so.
Let's start with the "where" in the situation. According to a press release from the St. Louis County Public Works Department, it is not legal to "push or dump snow into the roadway." If you do this, you will be fined.
Pushing snow into the road is a big hazard for motorists. Someone could lose control behind the wheel and get into an accident. Instead, you should shovel it into your yard.
That's not all - there are also rules about WHEN you should shovel snow. According to the City of Duluth, property owners have to clear sidewalks within 24 hours after the end of a snowfall. You can be ticketed for this if you fail to comply.
