World-Renowned Artist Transforming Holiday Center Atrium In Duluth
The Holiday Center in Downtown Duluth is getting a big makeover. Duluth-born, international artist Anne Labovitz will bring her colorful artwork back home to Duluth. She will be spending next week installing her artwork "North Shore Blue" in the atrium of the Holiday Center.
Anne Labovitz has spent the last two years planning and creating this art installation that includes a suspended sculpture, and long, gracefully looping across and sem-transparent murals that will encompass the atrium's windows that face Superior Street.
The sculpture will be rather large! When it's finished, it will be about 15 feet by 25 feet by 23 feet. The mural section of North Shore Blue will be about 40 feet long by 4 feet high.
It's part of Anne's rapidly growing aspect of her career which is large-scale public art. She's been creating artwork on a large public scale since 2015. This will be her 14th art piece of this kind.
Anne, who was born in Duluth, says this one is her most personal public artwork to date.
“In the past I’ve focused outward, capturing and expressing the voices and impressions of others. However, Duluth is where I grew up, where I still have close ties, and it evokes a myriad of emotions that I wanted to reflect on, celebrate and share with those that know it best.”
Labovitz's "North Shore Blue" will use color, scale, movement, and light to suggest the vastness of Lake Superior and the unique nature of the North Shore, inviting the observer to reflect upon their own connection with the majestic body of water.
The artwork will be completed by May 27 and be on display indefinitely.
Anne's brother, Mark Labovitz is the CEO of the Lion Hotel Group which owns and operates the Holiday Center. He suggested to her in 2018 that she do the artwork to transform the atrium. Due to her busy schedule and existing commissions, it's taken the past 6 years for her to design, research, and create the artwork.
You probably have seen Labovit's exhibitions in other public areas in the region. She's currently working on projects for the City Of Rochester, and solo exhibitions at The Louis Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts, Lubbock, Texas, The Minnesota State Capitol, and others.
She's also had exhibitions across the world including Japan, Sweden, Russia, and the Middle East. You've probably seen her art at the MSP Airport Terminal 1 & 2.
