For years Superior residents have utilized the free landfill days the City of Superior has offered. This October is the final two for free landfill days at the Moccasin Mike Road facility.

As we told you before, the landfill is running out of room. They've announced now that they will no longer be open for public dumping starting on November 1, 2024.

The Superior Telegram reports that some items, like brush and leaves, mattresses, tires, and electronic waste, will still be taken at the landfill by the public. But, items that would typically be weighed and sent up the hill will no longer be accepted.

Why Isn't The Public Allowed To Dump?

It's because the landfill is reaching capacity, and 90% of the budget of the landfill is paid for by commercial dump loads. The dump is built up like a pyramid. The higher it gets, the less room there is. They will no longer be able to have space for two dump sites, so logically they need to shut down the less profitable side.

Where You Can Go With Your Waste

There will be a few options for where the public can bring their garbage after the dump closes to the public. One place is across the bridge in Duluth at the WLSSD's material recovery center.

Another spot is Core Advantage on Garfield Avenue in Superior.
