You Won’t Believe How Far This Tagged Wisconsin Sturgeon Swam
Where was this guy headed? The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources shared a photo of a sturgeon that traveled the longest known distance on record.
Wisconsin Sturgeon Found Near Missouri
The Missouri Department of Conservation encountered a sturgeon with a floy tag. A foy tag is used on fish to track them and manage wildlife. The sturgeon was found on the Mississippi River near Alton, Illinois.
As you can see, Alton is on the other side of the River from St. Louis, Missouri.
The Missouri fisheries biologists found the sturgeon near Lock 26 Dam on the Mississippi River.

Sturgeon was originally tagged in Jim Falls, Wisconsin
When they found the fish and the tag, they contacted the Wisconsin DNR to share the exciting find. This fish swam a long way downriver! The fish was originally talked on the Chippewa River.
This sturgeon swam at least 651 miles!
The Wisconsin DNR calculated the distance, and figured out that the fish swam at least 651 miles! That's the longest-known distance a Chippewa River lake sturgeon has traveled.
How long can a sturgeon live?
The trip could take a long time, the DNR didn't specify when it was originally tagged. It could have been many years ago because sturgeon can live longer than humans - 100 years or more!
