New Laws Are Now In Effect For ATV and UTV Riders In Wisconsin
Wisconsin is a great place to go off-road riding, and the numbers back that up. Over 500,000 ATVs and UTVs are registered in the state, making Wisconsin one of the premier off-highway vehicle destinations in the Midwest.
The trail network is equally impressive, with more than 2,300 miles of dedicated ATV and UTV trails winding through the state, with another 62,000-plus miles of legal road routes connecting communities from the Northwoods to the Driftless Region.
Whether you're running the 74-mile Tuscobia Trail from Rice Lake to Park Falls or exploring the dense corridors of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Wisconsin has built a legitimate off-road riding paradise.

However, if you plan to be on the trails this summer, there is something important to know before you ride: several new laws have now taken effect.
New ATV and UTV Laws in Effect June 1
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging all ATV and UTV riders to review recent changes to the law before heading out.
While full details of the 2026 ATV/UTV regulations are on the DNR website, here are the key updates riders need to know:
- All operators and passengers riding in a UTV are now required to wear a seatbelt.
- Intentionally damaging property with an ATV or UTV carries more than just a fine; now violators can be on the hook for up to three times the cost of repairs.
- Towing any person on an ATV or UTV trail or route is now prohibited. On ice, towing a person is limited to 10 mph.
- UTVs are now subject to window tint restrictions.
- Eye protection is required if no windshield is present.

An Important Reminder From The DNR
DNR off-highway vehicle administrator Lt. Jacob Holsclaw summed it up: "As always, ride safe by wearing your helmets and seatbelts, knowing the rules and riding sober."
Riders with questions about the new rules can contact their local DNR conservation warden or reach DNR Customer Service at 888-936-7463. Safety course information is also available on the DNR's ATV and UTV page.
