177-Pound Monster Prehistoric Fish Speared On Valentine’s Day In Wisconsin
Did you know there is one specific lake in Wisconsin where you can spear Sturgeon? The short season is underway, and the seventh-largest sturgeon on record was just caught on Valentine's Day.
It happens on Lake Winnebago near Fon Du Lac Wisconsin. It's a large shallow lake where sturgeon are abundant. Each year the Wisconsin DNR has a very short season for spearing. It begins on the second Saturday in February and lasts only until the quota cap is reached.
Sometimes the spearing season is over in just a couple of days. This year, the harvest has been a little slower with the warm temperatures. The DNR expects the harvest to pick up with colder temperatures in the coming days.
The Fon Du Lac Reporter shared a story about a fisherman who speared the seventh-largest sturgeon on record, weighing in at 177.3 Lbs. Congrats to James Gishkowsky on your huge fish!
Did you know that Sturgeon are actually living dinosaurs? The species have been around since the Mesozoic era, 100 million years ago. There are enough of them in this body of water to support a highly regulated season. These fish can get to be close to 200 lb fish sometimes. That's bigger than some grown adults!
