This is a pretty terrifying thought for those of us who commute over a bridge each day here in the Twin Ports.  There has been at least two instances in the last decade where a vehicle careened off a bridge and over the guard rail.

For anyone that uses the Blatnik Bridge to travel between Duluth and Superior, you should look for an alternative route starting August 22. A scheduled repair project to the bridge is set to begin on Monday, August 22 that will have a significant impact on traffic into October.

A routine inspection of the Blatnik Bridge will begin on Monday, July 11, so motorists are asked to be patient during the inspection times .

Inspections of our Northland bridges have been going on all summer and now it's the Blatnik Bridge's turn this Saturday.  We can expect some traffic delays, but with the Superior-bound closure in progress they are doing what they can to minimize traffic issues.

Even if you haven't been outside today, it's pretty easy to see (or hear) it has been super windy. Forecasted wind gusts around 40 mph and dry, warm air have actually prompted the National Weather Service to post red flag warnings for much of the area. If you're heading to Duluth from Superior on the Blatnik tonight you'll be able to use both lanes.  The right lane will reopen at approximately 6:00 PM.  But take note, you may experience temporary lane closures next week.

Transportation officials say the Blatnik Bridge is among 7,795 bridges across the country that has been classified as "fracture critical" or "structurally deficient".
