Duluth’s Enger Tower Lit Red Monday Night for A Great Cause

It takes a special cause to get Enger Tower in Duluth to be lit in a specific color and on Monday, March 21 it will be lit up in red for a great reason.

The City of Duluth announced late Monday afternoon that Enger Tower will be lit red in honor of World Down Syndrome Day.

They made the announcement on the City of Duluth, MN Government Facebook page:

Enger Tower will be lit in red tonight to recognize World Down Syndrome Day. World Down Syndrome Day falls on March 21 each year to signify the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which is what causes Down Syndrome. Today, March 21, 2022, marks the tenth anniversary of World Syndrome Day, which the United Nations created.

They added that according to the Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota, there are approximately 4,200 Minnesotans with Down Syndrome. The Minnesota Department of Public Health estimates that 116 babies are born with Down Syndrome each year.

A person without Down Syndrome has 46 chromosomes. A person with Down Syndrome has an extra chromosome totaling 47.

The Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota used their Facebook page late Monday to share how many people are utilizing their resources which encourage "teaching children lessons about being different, embracing yours and others differences, and being a kind friend."

Today, more than 25,000 students across Minnesota celebrated World Down Syndrome Day using the books and materials from our classroom kits.
Tonight, nearly 100 families will join Sofia Sanchez, inspiration for our classroom kit book "You Are Enough," for a very special bedtime story.

The Down Syndrome Association of Minnesota says the book "You Are Enough" was written by Margaret O'Hair and Sofia Sanchez. It is an inclusive and empowering picture book that reminds readers how important it is to embrace your differences, to be confident, and to be proud of who you are. They point out that that Sofia is unique, but her message is universal: We all belong.
