Arrests Made In Scary Attack Of Senior In Downtown Duluth
Downtown Duluth has a great variety of shopping, restaurants, entertainment, and things for people to see and do with Lake Superior providing a terrific backdrop. Our studios are located on Superior Street, so I'm familiar with the area from first-hand experience.
However, as is the case in many downtown areas throughout the country, downtown Duluth also has its fair share of people whose behavior can create an uncomfortable and potentially unsafe environment, especially if you're alone.
Unfortunately, that element of downtown Duluth made headlines this week when a senior citizen was attacked in a parking ramp near the Duluth Entertainment Conventions Center (DECC).
The Duluth Police Department first reported the incident on Monday, then provided an update later in the week.
Initial Incident Report From Monday, June 17 at 6:05 p.m.
At approximately 4:05 p.m. Monday, June 17, Duluth Police responded to the DECC parking ramp for a report of a 75-year-old male who stated he was assaulted and robbed by three juveniles. The male sustained a minor injury from the assault but
refused medical attention. The juveniles were identified and located but are not in custody pending further investigation. The male's backpack still hasn’t been located. Reports will be sent to our Violent Crimes Unit for further investigation and potential
charges.
Update Provided On Thursday, June 20 at 8:20 a.m.
At approximately 10:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 19, Duluth Police arrested a 14-year-old juvenile male and a 16-year-old juvenile male for pending charges of aiding and abetting first-degree aggravated robbery and third-degree riot charges. They were detained without incident and lodged at the Arrowhead Juvenile Center.
SEE NOW: Caution Urged After Violent Pistol-Whipping On Duluth's Lakewalk
Unfortunately, this isn't the first violent crime in the downtown Duluth area in recent years. For example, as FOX 21 reports, a woman was sexually assaulted in the downtown Duluth Skywalk in March of this year and in 2022 a woman was attacked in the DECC parking ramp. There was also a pistol-whipping incident on the Lakewalk in 2023.
