The Bluebird Foundation announced the cancellation of its 2020 Spring Grand Award Ceremony, but they are still following through with the awards.

There are seven Bluebird Grants worth $500 each. Students who are entering the 9th grade this fall to graduating seniors are eligible to apply for the scholarships. The only stipulation is you need to be doing something in the arts. Dance, paint, sculpt, music, etc.

The cancellation comes on the heels of the coronavirus and the reason most of the businesses and public buildings are closing. Here are the awards that are up for grabs from their Facebook page:

Big Daddy’s Burger – Jim Stellmaker Award-sponsored by Dave Gonhue, owner of Big Daddy's Burgers, Duluth in Duluth’s Piedmont Heights. Gonhue studied trombone under the late Jim Stellmaker who has inspired many musicians who studied under him at Duluth Central.

John D Munsell – Theater Award-John D. Munsell who was the director of theater at UW Superior for over 25 years, toured, acted, taught and had been a part of over 400 productions in 10 years.

JCC Services Award

C.M. “Bud” Schultz Music Award-Schultz attended the University of Michigan and UMD, he became a teacher that taught at UWS, UMD and the College of St. Scholastica then finished his career at Ordean retiring in 1987

 

Rose Mary Harmeier Hoene – Dance Award-Rose Mary Harmeier Hoene studied dance at New York University and Colorado College under such great modern dancers as Hanya Holmes and Martha Graham. She taught at UMD and had her own dance studio and is connected in some way to all the college dance studios in Duluth

Bluebird Performing Arts Achievement Award

Michael Baker Percussion Award-Michael Baker is a 1975 Duluth Central High School graduate. From his humble roots in Duluth Michael went on to become a Music Director and Drummer for Whitney Houston, among others.

Applications will be accepted through Monday, April 13th at www.bluebirdfoundation.org

Many High School Seniors will not be performing in their last band or choir concert, last dance recital or last theater performance. Tracy Lundeen said in a release on the Facebook page, that the Bluebird Foundation will continue to support the performing arts community and students.

On the Bluebird Foundation Facebook page, it says they have awarded over $40,000 in Grants and Scholarships.
