Why I Support St. Jude
I'll be honest with you. There are days when I feel like I haven't really done any good after a day of work. Maybe I did my job well that day and got a lot done, but what really have I done that's impacted anyone else? I'm not a doctor, school teacher, or counselor. When it comes down to it, I'm an entertainer. I crack jokes, play music, occasionally pass on important information, etc... but I don't really better the world in a significant way each day. Luckily, from time to time each year, I can feel like I've done something by supporting St. Jude.
All year long we do fundraisers for St. Jude. The radiothon takes place every March and is the "Super Bowl" of the fundraising year. It's also where I get to help out the most by spreading the message of St. Jude on air. For a couple of days I really feel like I've done something good by volunteering my time and going through the emotional ringer to get donations. Because that's what it is. I really wish there wasn't a need to raise money and that childhood cancer was cured. That's not the reality; they need us so the radiothons will keep going on.
And let me tell you, it's tough to be on air. It's an emotional roller coaster of ups and downs. I've met some of these patients that have been treated and are now in remission. I've also met some that have passed away. As a parent, it's heartbreaking every time you hear the stories. However, these stories are important to get across. These families need our help, and the research benefits everyone, everywhere.
As you'll hear in the radiothon, it's a great place to donate your money to. One of the biggest reasons I donate each month is because they are a very responsible charity. Over 90 cents of every dollar donated goes to the actual research and treatment at the hospital. That's a great rate for charity, and they have won awards.
My wife and I were going over our budget a couple of years ago and we were trying to figure out where we could save some money. Money was tight for us (like a lot of people) and we had cut out a lot of expenses. When we got to the $25 a month we donate to St. Jude we didn't even consider cutting that out. That's money we can feel good about spending. And St. Jude is a cause that I feel good about donating my time too as well.
