Whether you're considering moving into a new neighborhood or you just want to be aware of what's going on in your community, crime data can help keep you and your family safe. An interactive map created by LexisNexis strives to give give the public the tools to be informed about what is happening around you.

The map, aptly called the Community Crime Map, uses crime data and other information from law enforcement agencies to generate statistics and a visual of criminal reports in communities around the country. As their website explains, this public map is part of a larger data system for law enforcement to track and analyze trends and statistics to help in the efforts to reduce crime and increase safety.

This website offers a multi-featured map that shows specific crime reports and a heat map of criminal activity, as well as statistical breakdowns of crime types and when they most commonly occur.

The Duluth Police Department got involved in this data sharing program back in 2014, giving the public a window into what is happening criminally around town. Area departments have contributed historical criminal information dating back to various timeframes. For example, data for Proctor goes back to 2007, Hermantown back to 2013, Superior back to 2007, and Duluth back to 1955. Other participating departments in the area include Cloquet, Moose Lake, Eveleth, and Chisholm.

With statistical data from Duluth, Superior, Proctor, and Hermantown Police Departments, there are a lot of ways to look at what is going on around the Twin Ports. A couple of the key takeaways from the wealth of data are as follows:

Key Twin Ports Area Crime Facts (Spring 2017 statistics):

  • Most common crime type: Theft
  • Most common days for theft reports (ranked): Wednesday, Tuesday, Monday
  • Least common days for theft reports (ranked): Friday, Saturday
  • Most common time for theft reports: 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
  • Most common crime report types by rank in the last two weeks (May 26-June 8, 2017)
    • Theft (110 reports)
    • Disorderly Conduct (66 reports)
    • Vandalism (40 reports)
    • Assault (40 reports)

This statistical data coincides with warnings from local law enforcement, reminding the public to keep an eye out in your neighborhood. Many theft incidents occur during daylight hours while people are at work or school. If you notice something strange in your neighborhood, do the neighborly thing and report it.

As for where most crime reports come from, the heatmap below shows where most reports have come from in 2017. Do be aware that the crosshair on the map in the downtown area of Duluth is just a city marker, and doesn't indicate anything. You can interact with the map and see all of the statistical breakdowns here.
