Volunteers Needed To Plant Flags At Cemeteries In Superior

The Douglas County Veterans Office is is asking the public for help to place 5,000 flags on Veterans Graves at Superior cemeteries for Memorial Day. They rely on community to support to honor deceased veterans with flags. The Douglas County Veterans Office only has two employees so it is imperative that they are able to secure enough volunteers to place the flags.

In the past a majority of the flags were placed by members of Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435 and students from Superior Middle School. But, back in 2020 they were not able to help due to the COVID-19 pandemic with schools closed and the veterans from the American Legion not able to gather due to the pandemic.

The flags will be planted May 27 at Greenwood Cemetery and May 28 at three different cemeteries just off Highway 105: Riverside, Graceland and the Hebrew starting at 9am both days until planting is finished. Ideally teams will consist of teams of 2-5 people until all the flags are planted. State and county COVID-19 guidelines, including social distancing, will be observed.

Veterans Case Manager Carissa Skistad said to Superior Telegram:

They gave a sacrifice, whether they actually died on the battlefield or they came home and died from those results or not. They gave a portion of their lives to the service and to protecting our country, so this is a great time for us to then respect or honor them.
