I recently officiated a wedding at Fortune Bay Casino. That's about 2 hours from our home in Duluth, so we decided to stay at a campground nearby and chose the HooDoo Point Campground.  We had driven through it the year before and liked the sites right on the lake. After staying there for a weekend, here’s what we thought.

HooDoo Point Campground at 5788 HooDoo Point Road in Tower is about 10 minutes past the first turn towards Fortune Bay so it was perfect. We had called early enough to be able to get a site right on the lake. The owner of the property was very nice and even drove over in his golf cart to help us get situated in our site when we arrived. The site we were in was a good area for a “group” camping together if you can book early enough to get it and again, it’s right on the lake. Although the site was a bit tight, it would have been worth it if we would have had time to kayak.  We could have entered the lake right from behind our camper.  They have the unusual amenity of offering pots of coffee, firewood and pizza delivered right to your site, we thought that was pretty cool.  Remember: you can’t bring in your own firewood, that’s the rule at most campgrounds in the area.

Unfortunately, time and rainy weather was a factor in not being able to do a lot of the things we like to do while camping. We did manage to get a run in and for that there was a nice paved running trail. There was a public boat launch and ice cream available at the campground office. They also had what appeared to be a DNR fishing dock available to the public complete with pole holders a short distance from the campground entrance but we didn’t have our fishing license with this trip. While there are a lot of permanent sites, there are sites available to travelers with a fair amount of sites available for those that tent camp and it’s a very family friendly campground. There’s a nice sandy beach, cordoned off for swimming and a playground for the kids. Pets are welcome (make sure your pet has been guarded against heart worm, after all, it’s northern Minnesota, there’s bound to be mosquitoes.

After we ran the paved trail, we needed to gas up the truck (without the camper on) so we drove into the quaint town of Tower and had breakfast at the Tower Cafe. It was very good and it meant that I didn’t have to dirty more dishes by cooking at the camper :) You are also just miles away from the Tower-Soudan Underground Mine Tour which my co-host Ken gives two thumbs up. All in all, I would recommend HooDoo Point Campground if you’re looking for a rustic family get away and thank you to communities on the Range that welcomed us with a smile!
