National Salvation Army Week begins on Monday, May 10 and it's purpose it to serve as a reminder that work is done with the Salvation Army all year round. Most people think of the Salvation Army around Christmas time when the red kettles are out. That's great, and they greatly appreciate the attention around the holidays as they do so much for families that may need some help. They do a lot of work all year round as well, and this year has seen an enormous increase in demand.

Here's a look at the numbers with The Duluth Salvation Army this year so far. That's just the 1st quarter. This is a big increase in demand over last year's need the Salvation Army met.

  • 14,529 meals served through Food Shelf, Medical Food Shelf, and Hot Meals
  • 4,736 person/days of Transitional Housing (homeless families)
  • 189 people with Emergency Assistance (77 Households)
  • 105 people with Rent Assistance (45 Households)
  • 18 people with Utility Assistance (6 households)
  • 42 people with clothing/household items (184 items)
  • 238 youth participated in Rookie Basketball
  • 3,908 people received food and toys for Christmas (Dec. 2020)

The Duluth Salvation Army has an annual budget of 2.8 million dollars.  60% of that budget is met by private donations from individuals. The rest is raised through public and private grants.  Each year over 2,000 volunteers donate their time to participate in fundraising efforts like ringing bells at the red kettles, gift wrapping, and helping distribute goods.
