We're heading into March, and the Northland really needs some help. March is Minnesota FoodShare Month, and donations are needed now more than ever.

The Duluth Salvation Army food shelf averaged about 112 households coming in each month last year in 2024. So far this year, however, the average has nearly tripled, according to Cyndi Lewis, the organization's Community Engagement Director.

“In 2024, the average number of households coming to our food shelf every month was 112. So far this year, the average per month is 308!” There’s nothing sadder than having to turn people away when they are in desperate need of the basic food staples for their families. We could really use the support of the community to help feed the many families in need.”

The goal for March is to raise $20,000 and 5,000 pounds of food. Donations are being matched from March 1st through April 6th as part of the Minnesota FoodShare campaign.

In 2024, The Salvation Army Food Shelf was able to provide 53,977 nutritious meals to those in need thanks to the generosity of the community. The Duluth Salvation Army food shelf is also the only location in Minnesota to have a Medical Food Shelf that provides clients with food for special medical diets, like gluten free or sugar free options.

Monetary donations help out even more than food donations. The Salvation Army's buying power can stretch a dollar three to four times further. It also allows the food shelf to buy items and fill gaps in the supply.
