I think everyone knows that when you see a school bus stopped with lights flashing, you stop.  No matter how long it takes or how busy you are, you stop every single time to protect the lives of the kids getting off or on the bus.  That's why I was shocked to read how many people are cited by law enforcement for failing to stop.

According to a recent Minnesota State Patrol Facebook post, nearly 460 drivers were cited for violating the school bus stop arm law from August 1 through November 30.  The fine for violating the law is $500 and I would argue that it's not enough by at least half.

Here's are some terrific reminders for all drivers:

  • Minnesota motorists must stop at least 20 feet from a school bus that is displaying red flashing lights or a stop arm when approaching from the rear and from the opposite direction on undivided roads.
  • Motorists should slow down, pay attention and anticipate school children and buses, especially in neighborhoods and school zones.
  • The best way to be aware of your surroundings at all times is to put the distractions away.

If we all follow these basic steps, it will not only save money by not being cited, but it protects the lives of children across the Northland.  Let's look out for one another out there.
