The Cloquet Police Department has issued a public notification that a level 3 predatory offender will be moving into the area.

By definition, level 3 offenders have a risk assessment score that indicates a high risk of reoffense.

Steven James Hayes, 33, is expected to be moving to the vicinity of Allen Street and Big Lake Road on Wednesday, April 10.  Hayes is described as 5’10”, weighing 178 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

According to a story at DuluthNewsTribune.com covering his conviction in 2012, Hayes pistol whipped his wife and threatened to kill her and two witnesses to the incident.  He later threatened the assistant St. Louis County attorney who prosecuted him.

Ultimately, Steven James Hayes was found guilty by a St. Louis County jury of all 14 crimes he was charged with, including aggravated first-degree witness tampering, possession of a firearm by a felon, second-degree assault, felony domestic assault, felony domestic assault by strangulation, fifth-degree assault and terroristic threats.

He was originally sentenced to 32½ years in prison.  He is now being released and will be transitioning back into the community.
