Northern Wisconsin's quaint small town of Bayfield has a lot of charm. The waterside Lake Superior village earns the spotlight for events like the Bayfield Apple Festival each fall and music events at Big Top Chautauqua, but is a fun destination to visit any time of year.

Whether you're exploring the Apostle Islands, visiting the orchards and vineyards of the area, or enjoying the cute shops and restaurants of the town, there are plenty of reasons to make a trip to Bayfield. The town features a handful of great bed & breakfasts for you to extend your stay, and a brand new one just joined that list.

In the late part of 2022, Queen's View opened as a bed & breakfast in town. The new business is an iconic, historic house in the community, once home to the late Mary H. Rice. This local icon passed away at the age of 80 in December of 2020. While she was born and raised in Stillwater, Minnesota, Rice made her home in Bayfield in 1980. The place she called home is a Victorian-style home built in 1892 by William Knight, located on the corner of Washington Avenue and N 3rd Street, just a few blocks up the hill from the Bayfield Harbor.

Prior to moving to Bayfield, Rice opened a gift shop called The Rear Admiral, and later a restaurant called Maggie's. Over the years, she operated other businesses in the area and became known as "Queen of Bayfield" - playing a role in inspiring the name of the new B&B, which offers some great views.

The home's location, when it was selected by William Knight, was picked due to the great views of Lake Superior offered by the site. One of the upgrades over the years added a wrap-around porch to offer additional places to enjoy those stunning views.

Here's another look at the home, showing off the home and its proximity to Lake Superior.

This new business was opened by the daughter of "Queen" Mary Rice, Katherine Hayes along with her business partner Margie Erickson. Katherine said that she remembers the home being much like a bed & breakfast while growing up there, telling the Ashland Daily Press that there were often guests coming and going. She explained, “When I was growing up here, I’d sometimes be surprised by finding a guest at the breakfast table I didn’t know had been here all night.”

Teaming up with Margie Erickson, who was the long-time house manager for the home. After Katherine inherited the home, she and Margie worked to turn the iconic home into a full-fledged bed & breakfast for the fall of 2022.

The charm of this home-turned-B&B is exemplified in this photo from one of the sleeping spaces. Queen's View is able to host up to 17 guests, including single rooms and suites on the second and third floor.

The B&B will be open year-round, offering a gorgeous place to stay with breathtaking views and a wonderful breakfast for guests. During the warmer months, Queen's View offers an outdoor pool as well as beautiful gardens and shared outdoor spaces for guests. The owners also say they will offer space for small weddings and other events.
