Last week I took a "staycation." I needed some to use some of my vacation time in order to not loose it, so I figured why not head to the cabin for a week and get some r&r. Fortunately for us it was a very good weather week, but it was a touch on the hot side. I found myself spending portions of the day cooling off in the air conditioning and watching some movies that I haven't gotten around to seeing. I gotta tell, you. You should watch these if you haven't.

Ford Vs Ferrari

This movie was available on demand with HBO. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the movie. It exceeded my expectations. I"m normally not a huge racing fan, but this movie definitely gets your adrenaline going. There are some great racing scenes, and a little of history. Matt Damon and Christian Bale are fantastic in this movie. They make it what is is. Also shout out to Jon Bernthal who has a strong performance as playing Lee Iacocca.

Ad Astra

Brad Pitt's space drama delivers a glimpse into perhaps a realistic future for mankind. It's set just a little ahead of our time. It brings some real cool scenes about what it might be like having commercial trips to the moon, fights over the land of the moon, and what it takes for humans to survive in space. It's really cool sci fi movie. The plot isn't exactly what I expected, but man some cool stuff happens in the coldness of space. It's worth watching, just be prepared as it's a dark movie.

Midway

I was super excited to see Midway when I first saw the trailers. Then, it got some mixed reviews and I just put it on the back burner as a movie to watch at some point. I'm a WWII history nut and I really enjoyed the original Midway that came out back in the 1970's. I was excited with the technology we have now to see what kind of scenes they could create.

They do a good job in the movie of getting the history right, like explaining what drove Japan to strike Pearl Harbor. How the Americans were getting their lunches handed to them for the first half, and how crucial the Battle of MIdway was. Overall I'd give this movie a solid 7/10. It's a good movie, it relies a little too much on the CGI, which does make it feel a touch less real. Still, it's a good movie to watch.
