One of Duluth's iconic Canal Park structures is looking for a new owner. The lighthouse at the end of the pier in Canal Park is no longer needed by the U.S. Coast Guard, but if you have dreams of owning it, not just anyone can lay claim to the structure.

The lighthouse, which is officially known as the Duluth Harbor North Pierhead Light, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016 along with the south pier counterpart. The North Pier Light was built in 1910, with the structure's light visible up to 16 miles away. While both of these structures have played an important role in shipping navigation for over a century, the Coast Guard says the north pier is no longer needed for navigation.

With the structure no longer necessary for navigation, it is now being offered for free to one of a select number of groups in accordance with the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act.

The groups eligible to take the lighthouse over include the following:

  • Federal agencies
  • State and local agencies
  • Non-profit corporations
  • Educational agencies or community development organizations for educational, park, recreational, cultural, or historic preservation purposes

This is the last of the three lighthouse structures in Canal Park to be relinquished by the Coast Guard to a new owner. The Rear Range Light, which is the light structure nearest the Lift Bridge on the south pier, was sold in 2008. The South Breakwater Light, which is the white structure with the red roof on the south pier, was put up "for sale" in 2018 in a similar fashion to the now-listed north pier structure.

Interested parties need to contact the U.S. General Services Administration by July 7, 2021. You can learn more about the lighthouse and how to express interest formally here.
