Construct Tomorrow Offers New Hands-On Style Job Fair

Construct Tomorrow Job Fair in Duluth Minnesota at the DECC will allow everyone to try the job first, either in person or in virtual reality.

I talked to Dave Cook from Jet (The Northeast Minnesota Office of Job Training) and he explained that a regular job fair has people to talk about the business, the people have business cards, they talk to potential employees, and maybe hand you a pamphlet to take home. Most of the time you don't know the whole story of the job and whether it is right for you.

Those job fairs work great for the jobs that are available but you can't do them and see if it's something you like or if you are right for it. What if you could do that job for a couple of minutes before you talk to the employer.?

Dave said with that in mind, Construct tomorrow with 218 Trades and Northeast Minnesota Office of Job Training, wanted to have adults and kids be able to make a wall of bricks, be able to paint, or operated some heavy machinery. You can't just hand the keys to a front loader to a 16-year-old kid! What if you could? They could see if the job is right for them and the employer can see if that person has a knack for it.

That is what happens at Construct Tomorrow, you can have a hands-on experience and decide if you move forward with the switch and get some training, or if it just isn't for you.

Construct Tomorrow takes place Wednesday, May 11th with a special adult session from 5 pm to 6:30 pm, and Thursday, May 12th with a youth edition from 9 am to 3:30 pm at the Edmund Fitzgerald Hall/Arena at the DECC. The adult session is a great way for people to see if they want to switch jobs to the construction industry.

For the youth portion, there will be over 1000 students from area high schools and they will get to put their hands on heavy equipment, build a wall, paint, wire circuits, and much more. Reps from 14 local union apprenticeship programs will be there to talk to students and adults.

There will be speakers at this year's event like Mayor of Duluth Emily Larson, Duluth Building and Construction Trades President Andrew Campeau, and ISD #709 Duluth Public Schools Superintendent John Magas.

The fish fry is one of those meals that has become synonymous with Upper Midwest cuisine.
