One day for people who need help to get it. Community Connect holds a one day free event on Wednesday October 22nd, for people experiencing poverty and homelessness and people in need of hygiene items, IDs, employment, drug/alcohol treatment, voter registration, outdoor survival gear, child care, health care, and other vital services to connect and get the help they need.

The organizers are looking for items and seeking donations to make this year a success. If you have anything on the Community Connect wish list or would like to purchase something from the list and make a donation, Donations will be accepted at the up until October 21st at Dorothy Day House at 1712 Jefferson Street. They must be new items, unless otherwise noted.


Event organizers are hoping by releasing the list, people will drop off the biggest items in need by people. Especially people in our area in need of Winter items.

In a list posted on the Community Connect Blogspot here's what is on the wishlist:

- NEW socks (cotton and thermal)
- NEW fingernail and toenail clippers
- UNOPENED foot powder
- UNOPENED antifungal cream
- NEW pumice stones
- NEW combs and picks
- UNOPENED travel-size shampoo
- winter hats, gloves and scarves (gently used okay)
- boots - adult sizes (gently used okay)
- tarps (gently used okay)
- sleeping bags (gently used okay)
- backpacks (gently used okay)
- hand warmers
- single-ride bus passes


Community Connect is also in need of volunteer hair stylists and massage therapists. Especially stylists experienced with African heritage hair. If you are able to help, please email or call Loaves and Fishes at 218-724-2054.

Community Connect is a twice yearly event that connects between 300 and 400 people to items and services they are in need of. The event is  Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gimaajii Building, 202 W. Second St.
