I am going to be completely honest here - I had absolutely no idea about this! I was doing some research on what you aren't allowed to dispose of in Minnesota and I came across something that I truly had no idea about.

Growing up in Minnesota, bonfires were always a regular thing and still are. That's why I was shocked to learn that you can't burn just about anything in them. I knew this within reason but I was not aware that you couldn't burn your everyday household trash.

I always thought you could burn paper plates or your old soda cans, especially if you are sitting around the fire with either of those items. It's so easy to just pop them into the fire and watch them burn. If you do this, you could get a pretty hefty fine!

According to certifiedrecycling.org, you can get a fine up to one-thousand bucks and even get up to three months in jail if you toss something you aren't supposed to in a fire and are caught. Not only can you get fined or do time, but you could also cause a wildfire or something of that nature which can endanger others.

If you aren't entirely sure what you can and can't burn, just stick to firewood. Burning of any kind of trash is illegal and certainly not worth paying a major fine! When trash is burned, it can become toxic, among other reasons you shouldn't do so.

The Minnesota DNR says burning of household trash has been illegal since 1969. There is only one exception to the rule, and that is farm households that have absolutely no garbage pickup service available to them. In this case, those households are allowed to burn some household trash while following the proper guidelines.

I for one had no idea that you couldn't toss just anything into a fire but it makes sense. This is one thing that is definitely not worth a fine or jail time!
