Whether you like glazed, Boston cream, jelly-filled or powdered, today is a great day to be an American and make friends at the office.  It's National Doughnut Day.  I truly thought Ken would bring me a doughnut to celebrate, but like Yukon Cornelius of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, I got nothing!

The day is celebrated on the first Friday of June every year, since 1938 and believe it or not it was actually through by the efforts of the Salvation Army and their tribute to women who handed out doughnuts to soldiers during World War One on the front line.  Because of limitations, they often had to fry the doughnuts in the helmets of the soldiers.  That's being resourceful!

Local businesses are celebrating the day.  If you buy a beverage at Dunkin Donuts today,  June 3, you'll get a free donut at either the Duluth or Superior Dunkin Donuts locations.  According to the Salvation Army, Johnson's Bakery in Duluth is celebrating their 70th year in business. If you make a purchase at The Salvation Army store today, June 3, you will receive a coupon for a free donut from Johnson's Bakery.  But, if truth be told, isn't EVERY day a good day for a doughnut?
