It's almost a summertime tradition in the Northland:  routine bridge inspections.  With two major (and a third -smaller) bridge crossing the St. Louis River to connect Duluth and Superior, a lot of attention gets put onto these important pieces of infrastructure.

It's time for the annual/routine inspections for the Bong Bridge.  The Minnesota Department of Transportation is alerting drivers that the project will start on Monday, August 10 during daytime hours - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Drivers can expect to see lane closures on the Bong Bridge - which will be marked off with highly-visible signage.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reminds drivers to use caution and to slow down while traveling through the inspection zone.  And - especially - put the cellphone down.

At the present time, MNDOT anticipates this timeline for the bridge inspections:

  • Monday, August 10:  Westbound lanes
  • Tuesday, August 11:  Westbound lanes
  • Wednesday, August 12:  Eastbound lanes
  • Thursday, August 13:  Eastbound lanes

MNDOT anticipates that the work should be finished by then.  However, if needed - due to rain or other weather conditions, this would the schedule for the next week:

  • Monday, August 17:  Westbound lanes
  • Tuesday, August 18:  Eastbound lanes
  • Wednesday, August 19:  Westbound lanes
  • Thursday, August 20:  Eastbound lanes
