A Minnesota Sheriff Is Warning Parents About A Dangerous Internet Challenge

A very dangerous internet challenge that started back in 2020 has now appeared to be a problem in Central Minnesota and a local sheriff is warning people about it. It is so sad how the internet has spun these ridiculous online challenges for kids to try and get views or have their videos go viral. But that is the world that we live in right now and it is so important to make people aware of these so they can talk to their kids about them and their dangers.

According to the Hubbard County Sheriffs' office, this challenge specifically targets teenagers and it originated during the start of the pandemic on Tik Tok causing numerous hospitalizations and one teenager from Oklahoma died doing the challenge.

This specific challenge encourages people to ingest massive amounts of Benadryl to the point where they start to hallucinate and then post your video online. According to health experts "With ingestions greater than 1 gram, diphenhydramine (over-the-counter Benadryl® ) may result in delirium, psychosis, seizures, coma, and death. There is an even greater risk of seizures, coma, and death when ingestions are greater than 1.5 grams of diphenhydramine. Fatal deaths have also been reported with oral doses greater than 20 mg/kg."

Unfortunately, in today’s society the use of illegal, and in some instances legal drugs, has become commonplace, with actors on social media encouraging use by our youth. We feel it is of the utmost importance to do whatever we can to combat this ideology, and parent/child communication is the most important.

Hopefully, this dangerous trend will go by the wayside soon like so many others of these dangerous challenges have. In the meantime, if you have Benadryl in your medicine cabinet it is probably a good idea to lock it up so teens in your home do not have easy access to it.
