Our Fall was mild and it appeared that winter would never arrive, then seemingly overnight it changed and now we have wind chill advisories and temps in the single digits.  Ice has begun to form and thicken on our area lakes and it's time to start thinking of the fun we can have with what mother nature has provided.  Here's some ideas.

    Apostle Island Ice Caves

This particular winter ice activity is considered random.  We have to wait until it's determined that the ice is thick enough and it takes days of sub-zero temps to make it completely safe to allow visitors to explore the ice caves.  If you ever get the chance, it is truly an incredible phenomenon.

    Ice Climbing

The only climbing I've done is on the wall at Vertical Endeavors in Duluth.  That was challenging, I can't imagine climbing an ice wall. (unless I had the proper climbing tools).  It's an activity that uses all your body's muscles and your core.

Book Across The Bay In Ashland

This is too unique and cool not to get involved.  It's a 10 kilometer race across the frozen surface of Lake Superior from Ashland to Washburn using classic-style and skate skiing.  We are so doing this in February!!

    Ice Sailing

I have never Ice Sailed before but it must be somewhat like being on a hover craft.  I imagine you have to have a strong wind, right?  A sailboat on the water can convert to an engine if the conditions aren't cooperating, is it the same with ice sailing?  Someone enlighten me, please.
