The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the immediate Duluth-Superior area and around the head of Lake Superior from Tuesday night through Thursday morning.

The key concern for this storm system is rain that will turn to freezing rain, bringing the chance to see ice accumulations between 1/4 and 1/2 inch, followed by 1-2 inches of snow. Windy conditions throughout will further complicate an already messy situation.

The way this storm system appears to be shaping up at this time has rainfall turning to ice overnight Tuesday, and continue into Wednesday morning. Ice will eventually turn to light snowfall sometime in the earlier parts of Wednesday.

With the ice accumulation potential of this storm followed by snowfall on top of the ice, travel is likely to become dangerous as this storm moves through. The combination of accumulating ice and wind may lead to power outages as this storm moves through.
