If I Had A Time Machine, I’d Definitely Handle This Blizzard Differently
Last week, I was in Southern Minnesota visiting with some fellow employees at their studios, when they were the ones who informed me that a blizzard was coming next week. "You guys could get feet of snow!" Yeah right. That's what everyone thinks about Duluth. It's this isolated, cold, frozen tundra. Clearly, they were just sensationalizing the storm, right?
If I Had A Time Machine, Here's What I'd Do Differently With This Storm
Local forecasts were originally just calling for like 6 inches, which isn't that big of a deal. It's a hassle, but nothing that's going to get you stuck. But then the models started showing even more snow amounts. Still, I wasn't worried about it. Most of us figured it would be mostly rain, because it has been so warm lately.
By the time I went to bed on Tuesday night, maybe an inch had fallen. Nothing too bad, it's not going to be a big thing.
Waking Up Wednesday, "It's Not THAT Bad."
I got up Wednesday morning, looked out the window, and thought, "It doesn't look that bad." It wasn't until I got outside and realized that the wind had blown so fiercely it created deep drifts of heavy, wet snow. Seriously, this is probably the heaviest snow I've ever dealt with.

I wouldn't have under-estimated the forecast
I knew we were in for it when the thunder snow showed up. That doesn't happen very often, but it certainly did on Tuesday night. That was my first indication that this storm could be just as bad as they forecast.

I Should Have Had The Generator Gassed Up
When your power goes out because of the hurricane-force winds, it's a bad time to find out your generator is out of gas. It's also bad luck that your gas can is empty, too. What a rookie mistake.
I wish I had started shoveling earlier
This snow turned into cement. My neighbor's snowblower wouldn't even blow it. I have a plow for my four-wheeler, and even with 4-wheel drive and lots of speed, I was barely able to clear it out. I shouldn't have waited for it all to be done to clear it out.
Who Knew We'd Almost Break A Record?
We were really close to breaking the record for 24 a single snowfall in Minnesota. Hoveland, Minnesota, had over 3 feet of snow (38.6 inches). They did break the record for 24-hour snowfall, though, so that just shows how strong this storm was.
I Was Caught Off Guard Again By This Fool's Spring
I was fishing a few days before on Fish Lake, where it was 50 degrees. We were outside with just a sweatshirt on and feeling like spring was here. Why do I fall for this every single year?
Technology Has Made Forecasts Better In Recent Years
There have been so many times when a winter storm has turned out to be nothing. They would predict a foot of snow, and we'd end up with nothing. But now, I think they're getting it right, or at least a lot closer. Maybe we should trust the forecasts?
Odds are we'll have another major snow event for the end of the season. Let's just hope we get all of this snow cleared out before it happens again!
