What Does IBU Stand For in Craft Beer? It’s Helpful To Know
Here's a tip for someone who's new to craft beers. Often, the brewer will give you a helpful guide to which beers are bitter and which are not. It's often found on the menu as "IBU."
IBU stands for "International Bitterness Units." A lighter, lager like beer usually has around 5-10 IBU's. A more bitter beer like an India Pale Ale (IPA) is more likely to be 50 or above.
This can really be helpful if you are easing your way into craft beer drinking. If you're new to the taste and start off with something too bitter, you may get scared away. Every reputable craft brewer has a less bitter, less hoppy beer for beginners.
