An organized cleanup near Duluth's Point Of Rocks area is looking for as many volunteers as they can get as the project continues Friday evening and all day Saturday.

The Point Of Rocks area is near the hill located at the bottom of Mesaba Avenue off Superior Street. Organizers say that cleanup is needed because in October, 2020, a group of people experiencing homelessness were evicted from that area.  They had to leave relatively quickly and while they took what they could once evicted, they did leave the rest of their things behind.

According to the Facebook event page:

In general there really are no options for storage and a lot of garbage & personal belongings were left on the hill. A few weeks ago some civic minded citizens Reece & Ryan took the initiative to start a cleanup. There is still much work left to do. We all met with city staff to come up with a plan to complete the cleanup.

Cleanup efforts began on Thursday, April 1 and they will continue into the weekend with the following hours set aside for the effort:

  • Friday, April 2: From 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 3: From 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Lunch will be provided on this day.

Ideally, 40-50 volunteers will be secured to complete this task, but organizers would welcome as many people as they can get to help.  City staff will also be assisting with the cleanup.

If you can help, you will be provided with snacks & water throughout the weekend as well as PPE, masks and hand sanitizer.  Gloves will also be available, but please bring your own gloves if you have them. Please click here to register for the event and to share it with your friends on Facebook.

If you are unavailable during cleanup times, but would still like to help, you can click here to make a cash donation to help cover food, supplies, and other expenses.
