There will be three different street closures that will affect traffic in downtown Duluth this month.  Hopefully a heads up now will help you plan your route and get you to where you need to be on time.  Here's what you need to know.

The three streets they'll be working on is:

  • Monday October 5th:  Michigan St. between 5th Ave W & 6th Ave W-
  • Monday October 12th:  Superior St. between 5th Ave W & 4th Ave W
  • Monday October 12th:  Michigan St. between 3rd Ave W & 2nd Ave W

The Michigan Street Project will be closed due to electrical work. It will close traffic on Michigan Street between 5th Ave W and 6th Ave W in downtown Duluth beginning at 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5.  Minnesota Power will be doing some electrical work related to the underground feeder lines that serve the Canal Park area.  They are anticipating the project to be finished by Friday, October 30th. During the closure, 6th Ave W between Michigan Street and Superior Street will temporarily become a two-way street, and traffic will be re-routed to Superior Street. In order to accommodate the two-way traffic, temporary four-way stop signs will be installed at 6th Ave W & Superior Street.  However, if you're walking to the Depot, the Depot parking lot or the Duluth Public library, the sidewalks will remain open.

Also, phase 2 and 3 of the project which involves 5th Ave W will be closed on the weekends and traffic will be directed to the signed detour on Railroad Street.

The W Superior Street Project will have that street closed between 5th and 4th Avenues West to remove the crane from the Maurices Tower.  That should take place between Monday October 12th and Friday October 16th.  Please note that there will be concrete barricades to block off the area and the sidewalk on the north side of Superior Street will be inaccessible to pedestrian traffic. However, the sidewalk on the south side of Superior Street will remain open to pedestrian traffic.

Finally, the Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) Project will be detouring along Michigan Street beginning on Monday, October 12. Michigan Street will be closed between 2nd Avenue West and 3rd Avenue West, including the intersection at 3rd Avenue West and Michigan Street. They will be working on the signal lights and doing some road work within the area.

During these closures, you will experience two-way traffic on Michigan Street between 3rd Avenue West and 4th Avenue West to accommodate access to the parking lots located along that section of Michigan Street and allow for deliveries and local access.  They are expecting to be working on this project for about three weeks.
