Despite a citywide curfew put in place by Duluth Mayor Emily Larson, scenes of unrest developed in parts of the city on Saturday night.

Following peaceful demonstrations earlier in the day that included over 1,000 people according to Mayor Larson, social media reports of individuals throwing rocks at cars and vandalism to a handful of businesses started popping up into the evening. This followed news that the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial in Downtown Duluth had been vandalized.

The epicenter late Saturday night in to the early hours on Sunday morning was the Kwik Trip at 27th Avenue West and Superior Street, where a store employee was attacked earlier in the evening. The store was closed for the rest of the night, but the crowd swelled in size near the gas station into the night, accompanied by a strong police presence.

Around 1 am Sunday morning, following several warnings to disperse, law enforcement used tear gas to disperse the crowd. Shortly after, the Duluth Fire Department responded to a car fire at Perrins Auto Sales on Central Entrance, just down the road from where protesters gathered near Ogston’s Body & Paint earlier in the evening. KBJR 6 reports that fireworks were seen coming from the car, and the fire was able to be put out quickly.
