I got my first parking ticket ever in the City of Superior. I guess that's not bad, considering I've lived here for 20 years and haven't screwed up calendar parking.

In late September, I was under the weather and spent the weekend in bed. I slept through most of the weekend and was feeling good enough on Monday to go to work. I went out to my truck that I parked on our street and noticed a ticket placed inside the door jam.

Ope, I completely forgot to move my truck. I looked at the ticket and saw there was a $15 fine. Not that big of a deal, right? It's just $15. So I threw it in my glovebox and drove to work.

I've been meaning to pay the ticket, but life got busy and I forgot about it. The city did send a delinquent notification in the mail, but I was out of town the day it came, and it got lost in a pile of stuff. It wasn't until I got the second letter that I saw how much more I was going to have to pay because I was a few days past the deadline.

To be clear, I am 100% wrong for not paying it and not seeing the notification. It's my fault that I was late; it's not an excuse. But the fine doesn't fit the punishment.

The $15 ticket turns into a $35 ticket if you miss the first deadline. My ticket was issued on September 29th, and the deadline before it went up to $35 was October 14th. If you miss the next deadline, the ticket goes up to $40.

Since when do you have a late fee that is more than double the cost of the original ticket? Doesn't that seem like a money grab?

It's bad enough that our taxes skyrocketed in Superior after the recent re-evaluation of our property taxes. Haven't they made enough money off that?

So anyway, if you get a parking ticket, pay it right away before the city sticks you for more money.
