Blatnik Bridge Construction Timeline – 4 to 5 Years With Only 1 Bridge In Twin Ports
Public meetings have been held to educate, inform, and prepare The Northland for the upcoming Blatnik Bridge Replacement Project. The $1.8 billion project is currently in the preliminary design phase, and construction should begin next year.
Blatnik Bridge Replacement Project Timeline
The Minnesota Department of Transportation's project page outlines the schedule. Phased construction begins in 2026, and it's noted that the complete bridge closure will start in 2027, and it will take approximately 4-5 years to complete the project.
That means it will be at least 2031 before Duluth and Superior have two bridges connecting the cities. Commuters will need to use the Bong Bridge, which has been undergoing maintenance and repairs in preparation for the extra traffic.
Bong Bridge Lighting Delayed
Meanwhile, the Bong Bridge has had its delays with maintenance. Delivery of replacement light poles for the Minnesota side of the bridge has been delayed. MnDOT is encouraging drivers to be extra cautious when driving in the dark conditions on the bridge.
In order to mitigate traffic issues for years long project, temporary traffic signals will be installed on both the Minnesota and Wisconsin side of the Bong Bridge. There will also be a new temporary traffic signal on 46th Avenue West and West 8th Street.
