I've been lucky to see some pretty incredible mountains in my life. I've visited family in Colorado and been on top of some of the most famous mountains in the Rockies. I've witnessed the breathtaking views of the mountains and glaciers in Alaska. But in my over 40 years of living in Minnesota (and Wisconsin), I never knew that Minnesota has mountains, too.

Ski Mountains In Northern Minnesota

When I've told people not familiar with Northern Minnesota that I grew up near a ski resort, they laugh. They have no idea that we have hills that big in Northern Minnesota. I grew up in Biwabik, Minnesota, which is home to Giant's Ridge Ski Resort which has a vertical drop of 500 feet. Spirit Mountain is located in Duluth and has a vertical drop of about 700 feet. But these aren't the mountains I didn't know about.

Sawtooth Mountain Range

The Sawtooth Mountains are located on Minnesota's North Shore. The range extends from Tofte, Minnesota, 30 miles east to Grand Marais. These mountains are small, but still considered a mountain range. Some of the views looking over Lake Superior are quite magnificent.

Lutsen Mountain is located in the Sawtooth range, as well as Moose Mountain. The views from the top of Lutsen are quite amazing.

And, if you are a golfer, you'll definitely want to visit Superior National Golf Course at Lutsen. It's one of the best in the Midwest.
