This is one of three surefire ways to tell that fall is in the air in the Northland (other than the fact that we already had our first day of fall, that is!). A seasonal Duluth business has officially closed up shop for the season.

The Portland Malt Shoppe shared the bittersweet news on social media over the weekend, writing that Sunday (September 27th) would be the very last day to have one of their delicious treats this year.

Gordy's Hi-Hat is another seasonal business that closes up for the winter and reopens come spring. They also closed over the weekend.

At least these seasonal businesses give us something to look forward to when the winters get long, dark and cold - which they usually do.

Portland Malt Shoppe Closes For The 2026 Season

Hopefully you follow the hot spot on social media or you may not have known that they'd be closing this weekend! They usually close around this time each year but it does vary from time to time.

On Sunday, they encouraged Duluthians to lace up their running shoes and 'run' to the Portland Malt Shoppe for one last sweet treat. I didn't see it until it was too late so I am definitely sad about it.

Of course, they will reopen next year as they always do when spring is in the air! However, we know in the Northland the weather always throws a curveball into things, so exactly when that will be is up in the air.

The Portland Malt Shoppe came to be in 1989 and has been an absolute staple in Duluth ever since! They are famous for their malts, ice cream and of course, incredible location on the shores of Lake Superior.

Until next year!
