Travelers In Wisconsin Are Now Being Warned To Avoid Visiting These Places
As the days get shorter and temperatures get noticeably colder, many people across Wisconsin start dreaming of somewhere warmer, or somewhere a lot more adventurous.
Whether it's a beach, a desert, or a passport stamp you've never had before, this is the time of year when many of us start booking our escape. Nationally, AAA estimated more than 122 million Americans would travel at least 50 miles from home over last year's holiday stretch, which was a record.
Wisconsin was part of that rush. Dane County Regional Airport in Madison served nearly 2.5 million passengers in 2025, a record that topped its 2019 high by nearly 100,000 travelers. Part of that growth came from new seasonal nonstops to sunny spots like Phoenix, Fort Myers, and Miami.
As for where people are headed, Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport officials have said Mexico, Florida, and Arizona are the most popular winter destinations for Milwaukee-area travelers, and Jamaica and the Dominican Republic have earned a spot on that list too.
Western Wisconsin gets in on the fun as well, with Sun Country offering nonstop service from Eau Claire to Fort Myers.
Trips like these aren't just fun, either. They're generally good for mental health, since getting away can reduce stress, improve mood, and give your mind a well-earned break from daily responsibilities.
However, it's important to plan ahead so the trip stays a positive experience. The first and biggest decision is where you'll go, and if you're looking for a true adventure out of the country, you need to thoroughly research unfamiliar destinations so you don't put yourself in harm's way.
Below is an updated list of destinations you must avoid, which includes specific parts of Mexico, one of which used to be a popular tourist destination for Americans.
