Old Farmer’s Almanac Predicts A White Christmas For Duluth Area

In August, the Old Farmer's Almanac released their predictions for the 2017-2018 winter season. Some people scoff at the findings each year but I like to see what they have to say, if only just for fun. They track the weather about a year-and-a-half in advance.

So what did they predict would happen for the Duluth area this winter? They predicted a warmer than normal season. The coldest periods, they said, would be in late November, the beginning and end of December and early January and February.

When it comes to precipitation, they predicted snow totals would drop below normal with most of it falling in mid to late December and again in early February through the middle of the month. (This still may be true but let's take a moment to reflect upon that record-breaking snowstorm in October.)

They also gave more detailed predictions for the months of December and January. This may be music to your ears If you're dreaming of a white Christmas.

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, we will see flurries with mild conditions from now through December 21st. From the 22nd to the end of the year, we can expect a snowstorm followed by flurries and very cold temperatures.

If you believe their predictions, we will start the new year off with sunshine but it will be cold. Temperatures will become a bit more mild from the 5th through the 11th. January 12th will bring us snow and mild temperatures with sunshine returning near the end of the month.

Whether you believe in their long-term forecasting or not, they usually boast 80% success rate.

Their forecast area includes most of Minnesota and Wisconsin.
