Well, duh! Minnesota is really having a moment: a brand new study just named the state the number one spot for road trips.
We already know Minnesota is great with a ton of easy day trips you can make across the state. From Duluth to the North Shore to the Twin Cities, it is just a way of life.

We also have some of the most beautiful drives, like a trip from Duluth all the way up the North Shore with Lake Superior views. It doesn't get better than that.
It seems that things are really catching on, as WalletHub released a brand new study on Monday (June 23rd) naming the best and worst states for road trips.
What Makes A State The Best Or Worst For Road Trips In 2025?
Summer is major for road trips, so this study from WalletHub comes just in time. According to their data, about 75% of us will do some sort of road trip this summer so analysts looked at things like gas prices, average cost of car repairs and more.

They also looked at car thefts per capita, scenic byways, the price of camping and more. Add these things up and you have the best and worst states for road trips. Let's dive in!
Minnesota Named The Number One Best State For Road Trips
Talk about a victory! Things that boosted us to the top? Having the third most fairs and festivals, including the big Minnesota State Fair, which means there's always something to do or road trip to.

Our low vehicle fatality rate, great bridge quality and low prevalence of speeding helped us take the number one spot here. We also have low camping costs and relatively low car repair costs as well, just to name a few.
Wisconsin just missed the top ten, being named the 11th best state for road trips. Rhode Island, Connecticut and Delaware have been named the worst states for a road trip. Better luck next year?
