Hull Rust Mineview - Minnesota's Grand Canyon

Hull Rust Mahoning Mineview is located in Hibbing, Minnesota. It's an overlook to areas that have been mined for iron ore on Minnesota's Iron Range. The canyon created is about 8 miles long from east to west and three miles wide.

When I was a kid, we used to go to Mineview in the sky overlooking the Rochleau pit in Virginia, Minnesota. They had large mining equipment, including enormous haul trucks parked up there. Those displays were moved when Mineview In The Sky closed in 2015, when mining expanded to its location.

How is the landscape created?

Iron ore mining in Minnesota is strip mining. That's when they drill holes in the rock and use explosives to remove the iron. It's also called open-pit mining. Some mines were underground, like the Tower-Soudan Underground Mine.

It changes the landscape, creating deep craters and in some places, large mountains of excess material.

I grew up in the Iron Range, and I never thought anything of how much different the land was. The sliding hill I visited was an old "mine dump." Some of the best, clearest bodies of water are old mine pits in Minnesota.

You can find Hull Rust Mineview at 611 McKinley St., Hibbing, MN. Their hours are May-September from 9 am - 5 pm.
