Have you seen more black bears this spring than normal? So far, I've seen 6 this spring, and I live in a Saint Cloud suburb. I can't imagine what it's like in areas that are more rural and more remote. If you feel you are seeing and hearing more about black bear sightings in and across Minnesota this spring, you might not be alone.

Social Media Can Be An Echo Chamber

First off, all of the bears I've seen this year, and it might just be the same one, are firsthand sightings in the early morning hours. I haven't really thought much about it, either, but over the last 24 hours, I've seen multiple social media posts from either law enforcement or community groups about black bear sightings. Some of those posts have come from as far away as Owatonna.

So what gives with so many black bears being sighted? In some cases, social media will bring up similar posts if you click on one, so that might be what's going on in some of the posts I've seen.

But there are some biological reasons why you are seeing or hearing about bears more often this spring.

Biological Reasons We Could Be Seeing More Bears

Right now is peak spring emergence for bears.

Adult male black bears are among the first to leave dens, and they immediately begin roaming long distances looking for calories. The Minnesota DNR says bears can smell food from more than a mile away and are aggressively searching for easy meals this time of year.

Young male bears are also looking for territory as well as food, so with so many bears emerging this time of year, some of the bears are going further to find their own 'territory'. Which leads me to...

The bear range seems to be expanding, which now includes more regular sightings of bears in places like Winona and Owatonna.

Are Black Bears Dangerous?

The short and obvious answer is yes, they are dangerous. They are wild animals, so maintain a safe distance from them if you ever encounter one. But...it is very rare, but not unheard of, for a black bear to come into contact with or attack a human.

So, Are There More Bears Around?

That's an unknown right now, as population studies are being updated; it will be interesting to see if the numbers change. All I know is that it seems more people are seeing bears this spring, so it might not be a bad idea to bear-proof your property, so you don't end up having to clean up afterwards.
