Let's indulge in a little sci-fi what-if for a moment. In the event of an alien invasion, where is the best place to be? If you happen to live in Wisconsin, how well-off would you be?

If you think about it a little, you'd be far better off in some places than others around the country in the event of a UFO attack. Someone actually put together some hard data to try to figure this out. As it turns out, Wisconsin is one of the best places to be to survive such an invasion.

Researchers with the stats website GIGACalculator did the math using a bunch of different real-life factors to see how each state would do riding out an alien invasion. While Minnesota ranked better than Wisconsin, the Badger State is still one of the best places to ride out a UFO attack.

Here's why.

How was UFO invasion survivability calculated?

The GIGACalculator team used a whole series of data to come up with their survivability score for each state.

Factors like population, population density, places to hide (caves, forests, bodies of water), military and law enforcement presence, numbers of scientists, engineers, and healthcare professionals, and food & beverage availability were all part of their calculations.

How does Wisconsin rank among states for surviving an alien invasion?

Wisconsin has an overall survivability score of 7.51 out of 10, which is good enough to put the Badger State in the top 10 states for surviving an alien invasion.

In all, that score makes Wisconsin the 7th best state for riding out an alien invasion, just behind neighboring Minnesota and its 5th best score of 7.79.

Why did Wisconsin get this rank?

Looking at the various individual categories, Wisconsin scored higher than average in a few.

Most notably, Wisconsin has the 10th most food and beverage manufacturing companies in the country, so staying fed will be easier than in many places around the country.

In addition, Wisconsin has a higher than average number of healthcare professionals per capita, so caring for people who are sick or injured would be easier than in other states.

Finally, Wisconsin's lower-than-average military presence per capita (6th lowest state in the country) theoretically makes the Badger State a less threatening target for alien invaders.

Wisconsin ranks somewhere in the middle of most of the remaining categories.

With Wisconsin's 7.51 survivability score being good enough for the 7th best in the country, you might wonder what states rank better. Here's the full top 10:

10) Georgia: 7.43/10

9) Alaska: 7.46/10

8) North Carolina: 7.47/10

7) Wisconsin: 7.51/10

6) Florida: 7.55/10

5) Minnesota: 7.79/10

4) New York: 7.79/10

3) Massachusetts: 7.81/10

2) Alabama: 7.91/10

1) Virginia: 8.06/10

In case you're curious, the absolute worst places to be are Nevada (5.27/10), Idaho (5.71/10), and Arizona (5.77/10).
