High tech transportation may be coming to the Twin Ports if a group of  developers have their way.

A personal rapid transit (PRT) system may be installed between Canal Park, Bayfront and Downtown with stops at the DECC and the new proposed development at the former Lafarge cement terminal.

Users of the system would move at speeds of 30 to 40 mph in three-person transport pods, said Mike Lester, CEO of Taxi 2000. He said a similar, competing PRT system is already operating on a limited scale at London’s Heathrow Airport, and another is at a planned community on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

A 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) loop potentially touching the DECC, Canal Park and downtown could be built for $60 million to $80 million, Lester said.
