Frozen Berries Recall Affects Aldi Stores
A voluntary recall effort is affecting the frozen berry section at Aldi stores. The concern is Hepatitis A contamination - the result of the processing at the manufacturer of origin.
According to news sources, Wawona Foods in California issued the recall after learning about the potential for Hepatitis A contamination, following a positive test that came about during a routine sampling program. The company chose to recall the food products after to thwart any potential for problems. At this point there have been no known cases of Hepatitis A caused as a result of the frozen berries.
While it can take upwards to two weeks or more for Hepatitis A to show up after consuming a contaminated product, the Food and Drug Administration suggests that the symptoms are easy to spot.:
A Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection can range in severity from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a severe illness lasting several months. In rare cases, particularly consumers who have a pre-existing severe illness or are immune compromised, Hepatitis A infections can progress to liver failure. Symptoms of Hepatitis A infection include fever, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, jaundice, dark urine or pale stool.
The FDA does caution that at times the symptoms can be difficult to spot in children younger than 6 years of age.
While the berries are available locally at Aldi, the recall also affects products sold at Raley stores. The brand name to look for at Aldi is "Seasons Choice", while the Raley store brand is sold as "Raley's Fresh Frozen".
