It's all just par for the course in Minnesota and Duluth! We always get at least a few major snowstorms throughout each winter season and this one will be no different. The Farmer's Almanac has already predicted when the first major storm will hit for our region.

In August, they released their annual winter predictions for the 2023 - 2024 winter season. Their forecast was actually pretty tame in comparison to past predictions, calling this winter cold and snowy.

When Is The Farmer's Almanac Predicting Our First Snowstorm?

While initially they predicted our region would see our first snowstorm in December, they have now bumped that date up a bit. According to the Farmer's Almanac, we can now expect our first snowstorm between November 8th through the 11th.

Please note that this is for the North Central part of the country and does not include Wisconsin, although they may get some snow as well.

How Much Snow Will The First Snowstorm Bring?

Of the snowstorm, this is what the Farmer's Almanac says we can expect:

Surge of cold air is accompanied by blustery winds and a snowstorm with some localities receiving more than a foot.

That definitely sounds like the first snowstorm of the season for me! We may also see some residual snow a few days after Thanksgiving, as a major snowstorm is set to hit the northeastern part of the Dakotas.

What Else Is The Farmer's Almanac Forecasting For This Winter?

As mentioned, the Farmer's Almanac has said that this winter season will be cold and snowy. They are also predicting below-average temperatures and lots of snowstorms, sleet, ice and rain. Sigh.

We all know winter is brutal no matter what in the Northland but it's part of the whole experience. Plus, nothing can be more intense than last winter, where we had our snowiest winter ever for Duluth. Fun!

The 15 Snowiest Winters On Record In Duluth History

Since the National Weather Service began keeping weather records in Duluth in the late 1800s, here are the 15 winters with the highest snowfall totals on historical record.

It is worth noting that the official records from 1941-today have been recorded at the area now known as the Duluth International Airport (away from the lake, on top of the hill). Before then, various locations closer to Lake Superior had been used for official weather recording data. For anyone that knows anything about how Lake Superior and the hill play a role in temperature and snow, you can see how this makes older records inherently different.

While these records note the "snowiest winters", they actually include all seasonal snowfall from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.
