This comes as no surprise at all but there's another scam you need to know about. This one was reported in Minnesota and could happen anywhere in the state.

While this scam has some similar components to other ones we've heard about lately, this one takes things one step further in a very scary way.

It was first reported by the Algona Police Department, which is located in Iowa. However, they are working in conjunction with Minnesota law enforcement as well, since this scam is also a problem here.

They warned about this scam on Tuesday (February 25th), sharing details of the scam on social media.

How It Works + How It's Different

With this scam, scammers are contacting elderly people who are more likely to fall for this ruse and telling them that a family member has been arrested and they need to fork over the money to get them out of jail.

What makes this one a bit different is that the scammer says there is a gag order in place, scaring the elderly into saying anything to anyone. This also creates a sense of panic and urgency.

Another thing that makes this scam different is that scammers are asking their elderly targets to meet them in person in order to pay the fine and save their loved one from jail. This means the scammer gets away with the money with no way to track them or get it back.

The Algona Police Department asks that you tell your elderly friends and family about this scam so they know not to fall for it. Be sure to report this scam if you get a call like this as well.

This is so terrible, especially because scammers are preying on the elderly here. Bad karma is definitely coming their way!
